The difference between the 304 stainless steel catback and titanium alloy catback Jul 05, 2023

The earliest modified cars were produced for better performance in competitions. Nowadays, with the development of the automobile industry and the vigorous development of motor sports, car modification has been recognized by car fans all over the world, and has gradually become a fashion.

Exhaust system modification is an important part of car modification. The reason for the modification is not only to attract the attention of passers-by, but also to make the engine suck more and discharge more smoothly, thereby improving the performance of the car.

At present, stainless steel and titanium alloy are the mainstream materials for exhaust pipe modification. Let us tell you the difference between these two materials as an exhaust system.

First, let's talk about stainless steel. Stainless steel exhaust pipes are common and common. Many non-modified cars use stainless steel exhaust pipes, and the smooth inner wall of the stainless steel exhaust pipe can improve the smoothness of the exhaust. There are many stainless steel materials, such as 409, 409L, 429, 432L and so on, which can be used to make exhaust pipes.

Secondly, titanium alloy is known as "space metal", and this material will only be used in higher-level exhaust pipes.

There are four main differences between them:

1. Weight

Compared with stainless steel, titanium alloy of the same volume is lighter. At the same time, the strength of titanium alloy is comparable to that of stainless steel, so most car owners who pursue lightweight will choose the exhaust system made of titanium alloy.

2. Heat resistance and heat dissipation

When the exhaust pipe is working, the temperature can be as high as 500°C or more, so there is a high requirement for the heat resistance of the material. In comparison, the heat resistance and heat dissipation of titanium alloy are better than stainless steel.

3. Sound quality

The wall of the titanium alloy exhaust pipe is thin, so there will be a slightly loose and crisp sound when the exhaust air passes through at high speed, while the sound wave of the stainless steel exhaust pipe is relatively low and thick.

4. Price

Titanium alloy exhaust pipes have higher requirements for welding and other processes, and the manufacturing cost is much higher than that of stainless steel exhaust pipes, so the price of titanium alloys is also higher.

Generally speaking, titanium alloy exhaust pipes have excellent performance in all aspects, but the cost is higher and the processing difficulty is more demanding. The mainstream of the market still prefers stainless steel exhaust pipes because of their high cost performance. Everyone has their own needs and preferences, and how to choose depends on your own preferences.
